PIRATES WIN WITH LATE SCORE

The Pirates didn’t board the winning point until there was 2:28 minutes left in the contest when Roman Romer tossed a forty-three-yard scoring pass to Myles Schumacher. That catch was Schumacher’s second as he had sixty-four receiving yards while Romer completed three of his four passes for seventy-seven yards. With the win the Pirates improved to 2-1 with their next game on Friday being a non-conference encounter against Fennimore, who beat Benton/Scales Mound/Shullsburg in a 40-38 close one this week. On the other hand, the Cardinals who find themselves in a 1-2 hole will face EPC in Pearl City with hopes of getting back to even.

I have to say that in 2016 we Cub fans were able to put to rest over a century of frustration as we watched them finally win the World Series in seven games over the Cleveland Indians. That game seven was quite the thrill as they were finally able to win it in ten innings and claim the crown. I remember as a boy cringing every summer as the Cubs managed to stay close for a while only to blow it down the stretch and miss the playoffs. 1969 was especially painful as they had like a four-game lead over the Miracle Mets going into September and lost it the final week of the season. The Mets went on to win the World Series.

Senator J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) commented to Tucker Carlson in 2021 that he thought Democrats were promoting an “antifamily” agenda led by “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too.” He recently said the comment was “sarcasm” and a “joke”. But his regret seems disingenuous because he further elaborated, “How does it make any sense that we’ve turned our country over to people who don’t really have a direct stake in it?” And he advocated in recent years that adults without children should pay higher taxes and have fewer voting rights. Taken in whole, he has offended quite a few women.

As the State Senator representing the 45th District in Northwest Illinois, it is important to me to seek input from my constituents on a regular basis. Several weeks ago I mailed a fall survey to households across the 45th Senate District. The survey was mailed without regard to political affiliation. Republicans, Democrats, Independents and others received it to ensure accurate results. While the results cannot be considered “scientific,” they do provide an excellent representation of how those living in this region feel about issues of importance that involve state government. The results also help guide my advocacy during policy discussions at the Capitol.

When we were kids in the early ‘70s and 80 or 90 horsepower tractor was about as big as anyone had in our neighborhood. However, all the farmers had a plethora of 30-50 horsepower tractors all over their farms that they used to grind feed, haul wagons, run the blowers to fill silos, mow, rake, chop or bale hay, or just about anything else that needed to get done in those days. We all had a bunch of these midrange tractors, and we only had one or two of what we called the big boys that we used for the bigger jobs like plowing or pulling a field cultivator to get the land ready for seeding. When I was in high school one of our neighbors splurged and bought an IH 1486 with about 140 horsepower. Man, he was really farming we thought, and he was the trendsetter in our neighborhood.

Most of us are familiar with Elizabeth Kuebler-Ross’s five stages of grief. She studied people who were dying. Her model, introduced in the 1969 book, On Death and Dying, identifies five emotional stages of grief. These are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. These stages are enormously helpful to people as they try to navigate sometimes intense emotions. There are many, many emotional reactions to grief, not just these five. What is less often talked about is relief. Relief is one of many emotional responses that one can experience when someone dies.

While watching Dr. Leo Martin’s (Richard Dreyfuss) increasing frustration as Bob (Bill Murray) fails to achieve even the smallest of goals(baby steps) makes great comedy in film, the length of time it takes to get the Senate, the House of Representatives and the President to take even small steps to reform Medicare is no laughing matter.

Last week my wife and I took her sister and our oldest grandson with us to the Wisconsin State Fair in Milwaukee for the day. We try to get to the fair each year because there’s always so much to see and eat. Our first stop was to see the Kids from Wisconsin singing group where high school students from all over the state sing and dance around on stage for an hour and a half or so. They also have a ten- or twelve-member jazz band that plays along with them. They did some songs from each of the past few decades as part of their act. Their enthusiasm and skill was very impressive. My wife and I and her sister were once in the high school swing choir and so we find it fun to watch the show each year. Now I must say that our days in the swing choir surely did not even begin to scratch the surface of what the Kids from Wisconsin can do. It’s absolutely as different as night and day.
